A. Mealworms are the larval form of the darkling beetle (Tenebrio molitor). Mealworms are scavengers and often infest stored grains, especially in warm, dark and damp conditions. Mealworms probably originated in the Mediterranean region, but are now present in many areas of the world, spread by human trade and colonization.

Mealworm beetles constitute almost 25% of all known types of animals and about 40% of all the insect species. They go through four life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Larvae typically measure 1 inch in length or more. Mealworms are scavengers and often infest stored grains, especially in warm, dark and damp conditions. Mealworms probably originated in the Mediterranean region, but are now present in many areas of the world, spread by human trade and colonization. The oldest archaeological records of mealworms can be traced to Bronze Age Turkey. Records from the British Isles and northern Europe are from a later date, and mealworms are conspicuously absent from archaeological finds from ancient Egypt.

Darkling beetles are prolific breeders. Females burrow into soft ground and lay about 500 eggs. The eggs hatch 4 to 19 days later. During the larval stage, the mealworm feeds on vegetation and dead insects and periodically molts. A molting episode occurs between each larval stage or instr. The larva of this species has 9 to 20 instars. After the final molt in becomes a pupa. The new pupa is whitish, and it turns brown over time. After 3 to 30 days, depending on environmental conditions such as temperature, it emerges as an adult darkling beetle. Mealworms are typically used as a live food for pets, such as reptiles, fish and birds. They are also used in bird feeders and as fishing bait.
